We time every stage of an outage. We never time the leader.

Operations teams split every outage into parts: detection, response, repair, recovery. Mean time to detect and mean time to repair are long-standing metrics in IT operations, and they earn their place because each part has a different fix.

Leadership has the same shape, and almost nobody measures it. How long did it take you to see what mattered? To decide? To tell the people who had to act? To check that it was done?
